University of Utah Department of Art and Art History Faculty Exhibition

October 17, 2006 - The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is proud to host the Department of Art and Art History Faculty Exhibition, November 3, 2006 – January 21, 2007. The biannual exhibition reflects the latest in contemporary and traditional practices in the visual arts. This year's exhibition introduces new works spanning eight studio tracks and features artists who are also distinguished teachers and mentors. The variety of themes and media in this exhibition encompasses the focus and direction of the Art & Art History Department, and is sure to capture the imagination of every viewer.

“The collaboration between the Art and Art History Department and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts has produced an exhibition that makes a notable contribution to the contemporary art world,” said Kathleen Carricaburu, UMFA’s faculty exhibition coordinator. “The concepts presented in this exhibition will be particularly interesting to seekers of ideas and culture, contemporary art collectors, students and prospective students.”

The Department of Art and Art History faculty have been instrumental in cultivating past and present generations of creative minds and contributing to the rich visual culture in Utah. The studio art faculty continues the legacy of the one hundred year tradition of the visual arts at the University of Utah while also upholding the strengths of diversity, collaboration, and contemporary perspectives. The variety of themes and media in the upcoming exhibition encompasses the focus and direction of the Art and Art History Department and is sure to capture the imagination of every viewer.

The 2006 Art and Art History Faculty exhibition introduces new works from a variety of studio tracks including painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, graphic design, printmaking, and illustration. Listed alphabetically, the featured studio artists include:

Nolan Baumgartner, Sandy Brunvand, Laurel Caryn, Elizabeth Dewitte, Justin Diggle, Lance Wade Duffin, Dave L. Eddy, William Emerich, John Erickson, S. Clay Furches, Thomas S. Hoffman, Beth Krensky, Kristina S. Lenzi, Jimmy Lucero, V. Kim Martinez, Joseph Marotta, Raymond C. Morales, John O’Connell, David Pendell, Shawn Porter, Sylvia Meena Ramachandran, Kaiti Slater, Brian Snapp, Carol Sogard, Paul Stout, Marnie Powers-Torrey, Maureen O’Hara Ure, Sam Wilson, Fred Wright.

An account by each artist about the intent and purpose of their work will also be a part of the exhibition. In addition, members from the art history department will produce a statement about the exhibition that will be on display along with the artwork. In conjunction with the exhibition, a lecture will be given by some of the studio artists where they will discuss their works and inspiration. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held Thursday, November 9, at 1:30 pm.
